January 22, 2000

This is another really strong show! The band were given cell-phone looking gadgets that weren't really cell phones at all before the show and Martin played with his throughout the show. You can hear how much fun the band is having at these shows as they crackle with energy.

Rheostatics - Club Vertigo

January 21, 2002

The Rheos were on a short west-coast swing and they played in Whistler the night before this show. In fact, the inspiration for 'Satan Is The Whistler' came from this trip, as Martin remarked something along the lines of 'They are a bunch of Fascists in Whistler!'. Anyhoo, Vertigo was the sweet club at the University of Victoria and the place was sold out for both the Friday and Saturday night shows. The band decided to play Onilley's Strange Dream in Whistler and then again on this night, a gem they didn't play very often. As well, this show features my all time favorite version of ÔStolen Car'. There was something in the air this night.

Australian audiences embraced the 'North American - Swampbuck' theme as their own as the event successfully ran over three years. Two fantastic promotional CDs were produced highlighting some of the best performances recorded by New Found Frequency's Australian production team Salt Live Recording.
Bring Me The Horizon - Club Tochka

Clambering onstage in a pair of scandalously tiny shorts that wouldn’t appear out of place in a 1980’s P.E. lesson at Grange Hill, Bring Me The Horizon front man Ollie Sykes is to say the least an unlikely ringleader for such occasions. Underpant linings aside, he’ll spend much of tonight’s horrendously short set surfing the barrier and swinging from the ceiling like an electrified monkey, bellowing out the likes of the brilliantly titled ‘Rawwwrr!’ until his eyes bulge. Between songs he cuts a much more chilled out and at times almost charming figure, cracking jokes and apologising in vain for his striking choice of attire; but it’s the final stages of send-off cut ‘Re: They Have No Reflection’ which provide arguably the biggest rib-tickling of the night.

Splitting the crowd in two as his band prepare to thunder into the track’s devastating closing breakdown, Sykes places his foot upon the monitors and prepares to usher in the countdown to chaos. “Who here knows what a ho-down is?” he asks, grinning as his band mates shuffle around the stage and produce a 1950’s rock and roll ditty that reduces the venue to a cauldron of laughter and bemusement. Seconds later it’s business as usual, the moment of brutality arriving with such ferocity that one fan is catapulted towards the stage with bullish force; his flailing limbs clattering the lighting rig before landing in a heap on the stage.

On Thursday 29th November, four female musicians from different corners of Melbourne came together with one common aim- to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation and awareness about a disease that affects so many of us. Coby Grant, Emilie Gassin, Rosie Burgess and Ainslie Wills played at Manchester Lane- the perfect setting for their folk/blues/roots/pop infused sets. A lot of money was raised, and the night was a great success- with a sold out show. The live compilation cd’s are now for sale, with al the money going straight back to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Clutch - The Hi-Fi

Australian music history was made on Dec. 13th at Melbourne's prestigious rock venue HIFI Bar. Clutch fans from around the country made the pilgrimage to Melbourne to witness at least one of the limited 3 shows the band performed this tour. Melbourne's show was like no other before - Clutch joined forces with New Found Frequency, the Instant Live+Archived crew and the *Artist Controlled Bootlegs team to record an unprecedented 140 minute live recording of Bakerton Group and Clutch and then offer it up as an INSTANT DOUBLE CD immediately after the show. I was at the merch table.....I saw it all....it was going off! There was so much sweat, so much volume, so much groove and everyone locked in, loaded up and unleashed as only the devoted Clutch crew can. You say you're a Clutch fan? Prove it.

Limited Edition copies of 'Heard It All Before - Live at HIFI Bar' are available for a very short time. Follow the link and get your Australian exclusive copy. Get going!

Tarmac Adam - Corner Hotel

What seemed to be an ordinary night tragically became much more than that when Tarmac Adam took the stage in early 2005. Playing an assortment of songs from their debut full length, Handheld Torch, Tarmac Adam left the crowd hopeful for it's future in the Australian music scene. Sadly, shortly after this performance, Paul Hester, founding member of Tarmac Adam and ex-Crowded House drummer, took his own life. This is the last known recording that features Paul.

Scott Tinkler & Marc Hannaford - Cafe 303

Marc Hannaford (piano), Scott Tinkler (trumpet) and Harry Shaw-Reynolds (drums) explore Rhythmalodics: three musicians interacting through a common complex rhythmic language. Freedom is achieved through compositions, either pre-determined or spontaneous. Music to get excited by.

This trio was formed in late 2006 and began its development at Cafe 303 as part of Tinkler's regular Wednesday night performances. This group works off complex rhythmic patterns and compositions to achieve a common syntax with which to improvise. The result is focused and original improvised music.

Each member of this group is a prominent exponent of Australian improvised music. Between them, this group has played with almost all of Australia's well known jazz musicians. Scott, Harry and Marc are focusing on achieving great musical freedom through the mastery of their respective instruments.

Originally recorded in 1965, it has become one of the most prominent pieces not only in Coltrane's rich and influential discography, but also in the history of jazz itself, and has seldom been recorded or performed by others since.

Melbourne's 19 piece "Oynsemble", co-led by drummer Ted Vining and trombonist Adrian Sherriff and featuring some of Australia's finest musicians, presented their staggering and powerful 64 minute interpretation of "Ascension" in a rare live-to-air radio performance on PBS-FM's Dizzy Atmosphere.

So come January 27th, your brain sometimes isn’t ready to handle a gig of any capacity – this was my mind-set before heading to Melbourne’s East Brunswick Club to witness what would probably be the most surprising gig I’ve so far encountered. Having only heard snippets of Emma Heeney’s past exploits with Brisbane band Gorgeous, plus one or two solo performances, I was blown away at the gentle and delicate nature of her songs, that at times were soft and inviting, and at others hard-hitting.

The Dirtbombs are a rock and roll band based in Detroit, Michigan, notable for blending diverse influences such as punk rock, glam, and soul while featuring a dual bass guitar, dual drum lineup. The Dirtbombs were formed by Mick Collins (of the influential garage rock band The Gories) as a side project.

This is The Dirtbombs' second return to Melbourne, Australia where they always stop by local community radio station PBS 106.7 FM for hot sweaty rockin' live set in Studio 5. They always fog up the studio windows! And most certainly did with this live performance.

72Blues - Avalon Front

72Blues returned to their home-town stompin' ground, the Big-3 automotive capital of the world, Windsor-hog-town-Canada. This show was recorded live as part of the New Found Frequency 'Australian Export Tour' where six Australian bands performed their first Canadian shows. Get fuckin' ready - the fuzz, the filth, the fury known as 72Blues serves up a pan fry of distorted gospel rock, signifyin' honkey-southern style.

The first track is an ode to hometown hero 'P.W. Long' from his "We Didn't See You On Sunday' release titled 'My Name'. This track was recorded live in Studio 5 Live for a PBS 106.7 FM broadcast last year along with 'Just Got Paid' live to air to Melbourne.

Jeff Martin - Prince Bandroom

It was a balmy night in the rock and roll capital, Melbourne Australia, when New Found Frequency recorded Jeff Martin's first of two sold out shows at the prestigious Prince Of Whales hotel in St. Kilda. This was Jeff's first official return to Australia after the dust and rumours had finally settled from the news of the Tea Party break up. The Tea Party, Jeff's highly acclaimed Canadian based progressive rock band, drew a substantial fan base out of Australia as the country welcomed his solo return. Jeff brought along the Toronto Table Ensemble to celebrate the comeback and the new album, "Exile and the Kingdom". This is Jeff Martin, Live from Melbourne.
